The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) is working on wearable and waterless technologies, automation, circularity, low energy and low carbon manufacturing, according to CEO Edwin Keh. The institute is also working on replacement of petroleum-based synthetics, new green material and high performance material for industrial applications.

The challenges with wearables are batteries and energy harnessing, whereas automation research involves computerised and intelligent sewing along with fast and accurate ways of operations, he told Fibre2Fashion in an interview.

The institute, established in April 2006 to enhance Hong Kong's cutting edge in textile research, holds about 200 patents. (DS)
