Fabric production declined in the Russian Federation during the first half of the current year, according to the data released by the Ministry of Economic Development (MED).

The production of cotton fabric dipped by 2.8 percent year-on-year to 627.6 million sq m during January to June 2013, while that of woolen fabric by 9.4 percent year-on-year to 6.4 million sq m, newsru.com reported.

The output of knitted products decreased by 5.7 percent year-on-year to 65.6 million units during the same period, the data said.

The Russian textile industry is facing problems as modernization is virtually non-existent, and the products are made from low-grade cotton by using old worn-out machines and equipment, which makes them uncompetitive.

The production of linen fabrics in the first six months of 2013 was only 84.5 percent of the quantity produced during the corresponding period of previous year, which points to the difficult situation faced by the linen industry.

Similarly, the woolen fabrics sector is facing problems due to shortage and poor quality of domestic raw materials.
