South African fashion designer Gavin Rajah will choreograph a textile event at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on April 30 during the concluding session of the two-day India-South Africa Business Summit as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. Indian minister for commerce, industries and civil aviation Suresh Prabhu will attend the summit.

The 20-minute textile show, being held in memory of 125 years of the Pietermaritzburg incident where Gandhi was thrown out of a train by white supremacists along with Mandela’s birth centenary, will project khadi in a trendy style, according to a report in an Indian business daily.

Indian High Commissioner in Pretoria Ruchira Kamboj had requested Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena to provide different kind of khadi fabrics, including silk and muslin, in both embroidered and printed forms for use by Gavin Rajah, who was also an UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
