CLRI discusses raw materials souring for leather sector

Aaprt from modernization and higher investments within the sector, setting up of an international supply chain for raw materials to strengthen the leather sector was discussed at the recently concluded seminar held by Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI).
Titled 'Leather Research Industry Get-together (Lerig 2006),' the seminars held at Chennai and Noida, focused on 'Global Repositioning of Indian Leather Products (GRIP).'
India leads in raw hides, skin fashion colours and quality, yet the leather industry is seeking new destinations to source raw materials from international markets to gain stature in the international leather products market.
Higher investments were sought for the sector to modernise its tanneries and Government was requested to fund up to 75 percent of the installation cost of eco-friendly systems to avoid pollution.
Briefing on the events, T Ramasamy, Director, CLRI said rather than seeking incremental changes in the indigenous supply chain alone, the panel suggested new sourcing solutions from sources abroad including technology-driven solutions that would offer better returns from indigenous raw materials too.
He added that development of an integrated command over supply chain systems and standardization there of, was also demanded.
