Indian Minister seeks setting up of NIFT in Ludhiana

To deal with the shortage of personnel with designing skills faced by the 1,300-odd knitwear enterprises, India’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari has sought setting up of a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Ludhiana.

Given the scope of garment and textile industry in Ludhiana, there was a need to set up NIFT, as it could provide trained human resources locally, the Minister said in a letter to Union Textiles Minister K Sambasiva Rao, Hindustan Times reported.

The knitwear industry in Ludhiana comprises of around 1,300 small and medium scale enterprises, which supply their produce across India, and also earn valuable foreign exchange by exporting their goods, Mr. Tewari said in his letter.

However, the knitwear industry in Ludhiana is experiencing an acute shortage of personnel with designing skills, despite the presence of young people with interest in knitwear manufacturing, the letter added.

In view of the current scenario, there is an immediate need for imparting training to the youth and making them competent enough in designing skills, Mr. Tewari said.
