MITI reports all round growth of textile & apparel industry

Malaysia Trade and Industry (MITI) declares about this year a total of 10 memoranda, covering 27 issues, were received from machinery, textiles and apparel, and footwear industries:
The machinery and equipment industry is crucial to the economic and industrial development of the country because of its crosscutting effect on all economic sectors, such as the manufacturing, agriculture, construction, transportation and mining.
In 2005, the machinery and equipment sector recorded increases in exports and employment. Exports increased by 16.4 per cent to RM18.1 billion, and accounted for 4.4 per cent of Malaysia's manufactured exports.
In 2005, the textiles and apparel industry continued to register increases in sales, exports and productivity. Malaysia's exports of textiles and clothing remained resilient, despite the removal of quotas under the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing in January 2005.
Exports increased by 6.2 per cent to RM10.3 billion, or 2.5 per cent of total manufactured exports.
Sales of textiles and apparel increased by 2.9 per cent to RM5.3 billion, while productivity, measured by sales per employee, increased by 8.8 per cent.
In 2005, approved investments in the textiles and apparel industry amounted to RM373.9 million (2004: RM823.9 million), with domestic investments totalling RM227.7 million or 60.9 per cent of the total approved investment.
At the regional level, Malaysia is the Country-Coordinator for textiles under the ASEAN Integration Initiative of accelerated integration of the 11 priority sectors. This initiative will provide opportunities for the industry to integrate their operations within ASEAN to take advantage of potential benefits, including leveraging on costs of production and skills transfer.
