Right attitude for the right job, survey says

School leavers seeking their first job after GCSEs can take heart from the findings of a new survey, which shows that employers in the clothing, footwear and textiles sector rate attitude over experience as the most important factor in securing a operative-level job.

The survey, which attempted to “get under the skin” of what employers mean by the term “employability” was conducted by Skillfast-UK (the Sector Skills Council for apparel, footwear and textiles), as part of a larger research programme involving five areas of industry.

According to results, clothing, footwear and textiles employers rated so-called “soft” skills, such as the right attitude, enthusiasm, communications and team work as the key aspects in the recruitment of operative posts, and are prepared to offer the necessary experience and training if a recruit can demonstrate these attributes.

The findings come on the back of recent research from the CBI, which also highlighted the importance of employability skills amongst school-leavers.

Other sectors involved in the research also rated communications skills and team-work as key to an individual's employability.

Commenting on the results, Linda Florance, Chief Executive of Skillfast-UK, said, “This just highlights a message that we are constantly hearing from employers – the importance of getting the right “raw material” in a new recruit, especially if that new recruit is a school-leaver."

"Opportunities exist in our sector for those with the right attitude, but we need to ensure that this employability message is well and truly understood by our schools and colleges, and by young people themselves.”
