For meeting the demand for top-quality and stylish women's footwear that doesn't cost a cow a hoof and a leg, St. Louis-based Brown Shoe Company has won the Most Progressive Shoe Company category in PETA's 5th Annual Proggy Awards.

The maker of LifeStride footwear, Brown offers consumers many leather-free and cruelty-free shoe and boot options. Brown Shoe Company CEO Ronald Fromm will receive a framed certificate and will be featured on PETA's award-winning Web site. PETA's Proggy Awards ("Proggy" is for "progress") recognize animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture.

Vegans and nonvegans alike can stride in style knowing that no animals were harmed in the making of leather-free LifeStride shoes.

LifeStride's extensive line of fashionable faux-leather footwear which includes everything from casual pumps to strappy vamps and ballet flats to stylish boots is available in shiny patent, tortoise and leopard prints, and more.

If you thought that leather was just a harmless byproduct of the meat industry, think again. The USDA refers to leather as a coproduct of animal slaughter, which means that cows many of whom are dismembered while they are still conscious suffer at the hands of the leather industry. Reptiles whose skins are made into shoes are often nailed to trees or posts and skinned alive.

"Brown Shoe Company and LifeStride are proving every day that what's good for animals is also good for fashion-conscious consumers and the bottom line," says PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich.

"Anyone who slips into a pair of stylish, comfortable, skin-free LifeStride shoes is helping to stamp out cruelty to animals."

This year, there were 20 Proggy winners, including producers and marketers of vegan foods, shoes, and cruelty-free personal-care products; wildlife-friendly innovators; an author; and a religious leader.
