De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, is one of only three UK Universities to be invited to attend YODEX (21 - 24 May), one of the largest design fairs of its kind. This builds on DMU's strong track record and award-winning reputation.

Earlier this year, married Taiwanese students Toby Chih-Hao Lo and Chelsea Yu-Chi Liu, who came to the UK to study DMU's renowned Footwear Design degree, were selected to showcase their work at MODA - one the UK's biggest fashion industry events.

DMU teamed up with MODA Footwear this year for 'History in the Making', a bespoke project which challenged final year footwear design students to create shoes that bring the rich heritage of the footwear industry into the 21st century.

Toby Chih-Hao Lo and Chelsea Yu-Chi Liu were among six students who were selected by a panel of industry experts for their innovative designs to be displayed at the MODA Footwear show, which ran from 21 – 23 February at the NEC in Birmingham, UK.

More recently, another DMU Footwear Design student from Taiwan, I Cheng Lin (Nikki), won an opportunity every aspiring shoe designer would dream of – to spend the day with international shoe guru Professor Jimmy Choo OBE.

Nikki's talent in shoe design won her the workshop when Choo visited DMU in November 2009 to give a masterclass to past and present footwear design students.

She spent two days (22 – 23 March) as Choo's apprentice at his renowned Couture House in London, UK, learning how the whole process of couture works, from drawing skills to dealing with clients.

Meanwhile, design students across the University continue to wow industry experts. Fashion Design student Kelli McGuiness' recycled garment is to feature at London's Graduate Fashion Week, after her design was named a winner of River Island's Re-Styling Competition. Design Crafts student Olivia McAuley has also been awarded a bursary by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths to make her innovative bowl design inspired by unicycles.

YODEX 2010, which will be held at the Taipei World Trade Centre, will see an exciting mix of up-and-coming young designers and established manufacturers exhibiting their work.

DMU representatives will be in the Overseas Design Colleges area offering information on studying at the University.
