The Japanese high-fashion house, Issey Miyake, has introduced Baked Stretch, a new kind of fabric which is baked like bread providing an undulating form and softness, in its new spring summer 2016 collection.

“Baked Stretch is technique that creates new types of pleats using an innovative process. A piece of cloth is imprinted with special glue and is placed in a baking machine. Similar to bread rising in the oven as it bakes, the glue expand due to the high heat, transforming moulds of the pleats to complete the clothing,” the company said on its website.

Baked Stretch is developed by Issey Miyake designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae, who learned about swelling glue and through a process of trial and error of changing the quantity of glue and the temperature of baking came up with the technique. The protruding bands of the fabric provide a 3D effect to the fabric.

Botanical Delights, the spring summer 2016 collection, is inspired by the lively tropical plants, and expressed bright colours and forms with the new Baked Stretch technique. The collection uses colourful prints to express the kind of overflowing strength of the plants that grow in the tropics.

Issey Miyake debuted his first collection in New York in 1971 and began participating in Paris Fashion Week from 1973. His unique concept of clothing as “A Piece of Cloth” was widely acclaimed throughout the world from the very beginning. An inexhaustible explorer, he has continued to open up new horizons for making clothes through research, experimentation and development while re-imagining the relationship between the human body and clothing. (HO)
