Tashkent is the largest city in Central Asia and has a population of approximately two million people, with an additional two million people living in the surrounding regions. Since 1991, Uzbekistan has more than doubled its domestic oil production to more than 9 million tons which has allowed it to achieve oil self-sufficiency. Uzbekistan has substantial hydrocarbon resources, particularly in natural gas where it is among the world's largest ten producers.
