Japan's society was in shock hearing news of a sales assistant getting stabbed in the eye with an umbrella by a customer. The sales assistant's right eye had ruptured, and police report that the attacker had attacked because the oxygen inhaler sold at the floor had made her ill.
This accident had taken place at Keio Department Store, one of the prominent department stores in the district of Shinjuku, Tokyo.
Any Japanese going oversees will feel homesick after encountering customer services anywhere else in the world, as Japanese customer service is by far the most courteous.
In such society, one cannot imagine the sales assistant losing her professional self and agitating the customer, but the nation has seen that in customer service, the right and wrong cannot be determined so easily and each sales assistant have to be equipped to deal with the situations.
A teen magazine had revealed that sales assistants were the number one wanted job by their readers. The fashion industry is full of well known producers who had worked as sales assistants who live a Cinderella life of becoming a big star. But working as a sales assistant in Japan is no piece of cake. Everyone is aware of the motto of “Customers are our god”.
The politeness in every word spoken, the angle of each bow, the wrapping of each product, the folding, whatever is in the shop must be there as though it is an art. It is rare to see dust on the floors; it is rare to see a fingerprint on the glass table.
