Where do you shop?

Tokyo Metro, the subway operating company, had established a 100 percent owned subsidiary Metro Properties in April of 2006. The company's operation had begun with the launch of “Echika” translating as “underground station” in the subway station of Omotesando.

The original sales target for the first year had been at 2.8BJYen at this new facility, but at this point, they predict the sales to reach 3.4BJYen. With this success, the company has announced their plan on building such commercial facility in all of their 168 stations.

The facilities will be opened inside the station like the one in Omotesando, or a connected building, and/or under the railways and highways, that is adjacent to the subway exits. They currently have such commercial facility in 30 of their stations and hold 200 tenants and total annual sale at around 20 BJYen at present.

The idea of shopping inside the station is quite new to Japan, but an idea that works almost too perfectly to not have existed in the past.

But the main success of this Echika is their strengths in installing the store spaces with stores that the station users would like.

For example, as there is many office ladies using the station, the cosmetics store, is always filled with office ladies from 6pm. It is revealed that women in their 20's spend about 20,000 to 30,000JYen on fashion per month, and is only 14% of their income.

These women prefer to shop at fashion buildings rather than department stores or independent stores. The way the Echika has filled their stores allows women to buy small accessories, cosmetics, and some clothes; just like a fashion building.
