Even in the present economic climate in Brazil, with the devaluation of the dollar penalizing export industries and taxes approaching 40% of the end price of products, the four days of the 31st Fimec - International Leather, Chemical, Component and Accessory, Equipment and Machinery for Footwear and Tanneries Fair – from April 17 to 20, in the Fenac halls in Novo Hamburgo, exceeded expectations.

The event attracted 56,011 visitors from 42 countries, most of whom came from Argentina (988), Peru (352), Italy (276), Colombia (252) and Chile (161), together with Brazil. For Julio Cézar Camerini, director-president of the event organizers, Fenac S.A., FIMEC 2007 was a watershed.

“We noticed that attendance at the fair was at very professional level, with those taking part really willing to be there. Many international buyers and exhibitors have chosen Brazil and not Italy, which just proves our great potential,” he says. Fimec displayed 1,200 brand names, occupying more than 40,000 square meters and representing 25 countries

Professionals from 26 Brazilian states took part in the fair, with most the significant attendance from São Paulo (6,570), Santa Catarina (1,431), Minas Gerais (754), Paraná (404), Rio de Janeiro (353), Ceará (289) and Bahia (254). Fimec 2007's exhibitors banked on new releases and reduced profit margins, which led to increased contacts with buyers and sales during the event.

All sectors involved in the leatherwork-footwear cluster took part in the fair and the professional visitors knew how to make good use of the occasion. Of a total of more than 56,000 visitors 11,046 had links to the footwear-components industry and trade, 7,945 to the footwear industry, 4,469 to chemical products, 4,157 to footwear machinery and equipment, 3,421 to tanneries and 1,528 to leather finishing and marketing.
