United Retail Comparable store sales decline in Aug

United Retail Group Inc announced that net sales during August 2007 were $24.9 million compared with $26.4 million during August 2006.
Comparable store sales decreased 7% for the month versus a 3% increase in August 2006. Net sales increased 1% for the fiscal year-to-date to $258.2 million from $256.7 million in the same period last year.
Comparable store sales decreased 1% for the fiscal year-to-date. Comparable store sales data does not include avenue.com sales, which increased 46% for the month of August and 51% for the fiscal year to date.
Raphael Benaroya, the Company's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “Soft consumer spending continued to create a challenging retail environment, which affected recent comparable store sales."
"With the average age of our customer above 40 years old, August has not been an important 'back-to-school' month for us as it has been for other retailers who target younger demographics. Rather, it is a time for us to build Fall inventories and prepare for the upcoming Fall season.”
