Sotheby's London is pleased to announce that on Wednesday July 16th, 2008 there will be a special summer sale of Important Watches. The auction will be preceded by a public exhibition in the company's Bond Street rooms on Friday, 11th July, from 9am to 4.30pm, on Sunday 13th July from 12 noon until 4pm, and Monday 14th-Tuesday 15th July from 9am to 4.30pm.

Alexander Barter, Deputy Worldwide Head of Watches, Sotheby's International, said: “Following the highly successful watch auctions at Sotheby's this spring, which have seen record results in every location: Hong Kong, New York and Geneva, we are delighted to announce an outstanding group of 98 exceptional wristwatches and watches to be sold in London this July.”

The highly selective sale will concentrate on rare and desirable models by the most prominent manufacturers, such as Patek Philippe, Rolex, A. Lange & Söhne, Breguet, Audemars Piguet and IWC.

Amongst the Rolex watches offered are a group of rare steel sports models including examples of the Comex, Military Submariner (illustrated on the right), Explorer and Daytona models (estimates from £5,000 / CHF10,000 / $9,900 / € 6,300).

A particularly fine example of the rare steel triple calendar, moon-phase reference 8171 by Rolex is to be offered with an estimate of £25,000-35,000 / CHF51'200-71,600 / $49,500-69,500 / 31,400-44,000. An interesting group of modern Rolex wristwatches including one of the recently issued Rolex GMT models in steel and gold with ceramic bezel (est. £2,000-3,000 / CHF4,100-6,100 / $4,000-6,000 / € 2,550-3,800).

The undeniable highlights of the auction are two of the most important modern complication wristwatches made by Patek Philippe; the references 5016 and 5013 are exceptional minute repeating perpetual calendar wristwatches estimated at £350,000-450,000 (CHF710,000-920,000 / $690,000-890,000 / € 440,000-565,000) and at £250,000-350,000 (CHF510,000-710,000 / $495,000-695,000 / €314,000-440,000) respectively.

The Patek Philippe 5016 incorporating tourbillon escapement, is also fitted with a rare and highly appealing black dial. Six other modern perpetual calendar wristwatches by Patek Philippe will be offered at the auction with estimates starting from £10,000 / CHF 20,500/ $19,500 / € 12,600.

Whilst more than half of the auction is devoted to Patek Philippe and Rolex, other famous brands such as Lange & Söhne, Audemars Piguet, Panerai, IWC and Breguet are also well represented with sports, complication and classic models, such as a Lange Sax-O-Mat in platinum (est. £6,000-9,000 / CHF12,300-18,400 / $11,900-17,8000 / € 7,600-11,300) and the Destriero Scafusia by the International Watch company which features minute repetition, split seconds chronograph, perpetual calendar, and a tourbillon escapement (est. £60,000-80,000 / CHF122,500-163,600 / $119,000-159,000 / € 76,500-101,000).
