The farm-to-fashion project conceptualised by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Bhubaneswar will be adopted in other NIFTs across the country as per the twentieth report of the parliamentary standing committee on labour. The report on the functioning of NIFT under the textiles ministry was presented in both houses of parliament recently.

NIFT Bhubaneswar has identified about 60 dye yielding plants and 10 natural fibre plants grown in Odisha and planted almost all of those in the campus, the report noted. It has proposed to have a ‘Centre for Sustainable Fashion’ (CSF) based on the unique richness of handloom, natural dye and natural fibre base.

NIFT Bhubaneswar is the only institution today in the world where the students can see the entire value chain of eco-friendly fashion, according to the ministry, which said all NIFT campuses have been asked to initiate similar projects based on their location, typographical uniqueness and availability of resources. NIFT Kangra in Himachal Pradesh has already initiated action regarding this, according to a media report from Odisha.

Earlier this month, the same parliamentary committee recommended to the textiles ministry to expedite NIFT’s Design Innovation Incubator Project and operationalise it within the scheduled timeline. The aim of that project is to encourage entrepreneurship and generate employment.
