Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has written to the Union Textiles Ministry, urging it to set up three National Institutes of Fashion Technology (NIFTs) in Lucknow, Noida and Bareilly, according to media reports.

In his letter to Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar, Yadav said the UP government would provide land free of cost if needed.

The Textiles Ministry had earlier said only one NIFT campus can be opened in a state. That response was in reply to an earlier letter the CM wrote last February. In his latest letter, Akhilesh Yadav asked Gangwar to reconsider the ministry's earlier decision and clear setting up of three NIFTs in Noida, Bareilly and Lucknow.

The Chief Minister said that considering the size of Uttar Pradesh, the only NIFT centre in Rae Bareli is insufficient for the needs of the entire state, and even three NIFTs would still be inadequate but at least, there would be qualitative improvement in the textile industry of the state.
