Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has described the country's fashion industry as one of the economy's strength.

At an event marking the second anniversary of the Australian Fashion Chamber in Sydney on Wednesday night, she said the government is backing the industry, which employs about 220,000 Australians directly while ploughing $12 billion back into the nation's economy, as part of the $90 billion generated among the creative industries.

She complimented the Australian fashion industry, saying, "Our fashion designers and manufacturers and models and stylists are known all over the world so it's very exciting to celebrate Australian fashion in this way," she said.

"We back the fashion industry, we back our designers and manufacturers, our wool industry, our cotton industry and that's all part a superb export industry as well as, of course, providing a lot of style and sophistication for the local market."

Bishop said she was often struck by how impressed people were with the sophistication of Australian designs, including in the emerging resort wear sector.

"And Australian Fashion Week recently showcased the world's first resortwear collection so we really do lead the field in so many ways," she said.

The Australian Fashion Chamber was developed in 2014 to support emerging talent and ensure the Australian industry remains internationally competitive. (SH)
