Gangwar defends Chauhan's appointment as NIFT chief

Shortly after his appointment as chairman of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), former Test cricketer and two-time BJP MP Chetan Chauhan said he would work to the best of his ability.

Chauhan, who is the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) vice-president and a senior BCCI official, runs a cricket academy and owns a newsprint business.

Chauhan said: “I will spend 60 per cent of the time in DDCA, 20 per cent at NIFT and 20 per cent in my business.”

While Chauhan's appointment has drawn criticism from the Opposition, Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar defended the appointment saying the NIFT board has 11 members belonging to different walks of life, including businessmen as well as designers.

He dismissed questions over Chauhan's competence to lead a premier fashion institute, saying the former cricketer has a fair idea of fashion as he is a well-travelled personality.

Gangwar added that apart from Chauhan, the NIFT board comprises 11 prominent members from varied background, including Sunil Sethi, chairman at Fashion Design Council of India, Ruby Yadav, former Miss Asia, Balkrishan Goenka, chairman of Welspun Group, and PK Gupta, chairman of Sharda Group of Institutions and chancellor of Sharda University. The board also has three MPs -- Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and Poonam Mahajan and V. Sathyabama of Lok Sabha - as its members.

According to the NIFT Act 2006, the Chairperson of the NIFT's Board of Governors shall be an eminent academician, scientist or technologist or professional, who is to be nominated by the Visitor, in this case the President of India. (SH)
