TCF Industry back in fashion, Senator Kim Carr

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research said he was excited about the future of the highly innovative Australian textile, clothing and footwear (TCF) industry.
Speaking at the Australian TCF Technology Network Annual Conference in Melbourne, Senator Carr emphasised the Rudd Government's faith in the industry and its capacity to adapt and prosper in the face of increasing competitive pressures.
"The beauty of the TCF industry is that it is constantly reinventing itself, constantly innovating," Senator Carr said.
“It is already moving into high-value areas such as designer fashion and technical textiles – where the industry's global future lies. We need to build on our strengths in science, research and the creative arts to accelerate that process.
“The Australian TCF industry is a world leader in natural fibres, it is using biotechnology and nanotechnology to create revolutionary new products – and it has great style.
"This is an industry with a terrific story to tell," Senator Carr said.
Senator Carr said that the Howard Government treated the TCF industry as some sort of basket case that needed palliative care.
"In contrast, the Rudd Government is looking to revitalise the TCF industry by encouraging it to adopt new and innovative ways to develop and promote its products.
"Innovation can revitalise TCF companies and put them on the path to global success," Senator Carr said.
To capture the benefits of innovation, the Government has commissioned an independent review of the TCF industries, currently being conducted by Professor Roy Green, Dean of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management.
Professor Green is being supported by a reference group drawn from industry, the unions and the research community, and which includes a senior economist.
The Review is looking at issues, opportunities and challenges in the TCF Industry and will report by 31 August 2008.
"I am eager to hear the outcomes of the Review,” Senator Carr said.
"This is an industry that provides jobs for over 48,000 Australians and contributes around $2.8 billion in industry value added. The families and communities supported by the TCF industries expect, and deserve, a strong commitment to its future from the Government."
This is the fourth year that the TCF Technology Network Annual Conference is being held.
The conference brings together experts from within Australia as well as overseas and keeps industry informed on the latest technologies and processes.
