For the first time, Taiwan hosted an international fashion conference and an expo for clothing industry professors, which drew participation of more than 100 professors from across Asia and the US.

The 2011 Korean Society for Clothing Industry (KSCI) International Conference and the 16th International Invited Fashion Exhibition of Professors was organized by the southern Taiwan-based National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and KSCI.

Professors from the US, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, China and South Korea took part in the three-day event that concluded on August 4.

About 130 garment items designed by professors, experts and students of the Taiwan University were exhibited at the expo.

Jeong Sook Lee, President of KSCI, said due to limited availability of land and scarcity of raw materials, South Korea and Taiwan are unable to withstand competition in conventional textile industries. Hence, he suggested that the two countries should concentrate on evolving functional textile techniques.

He said that South Korea can gain knowledge on functional textile technology from Taiwan. It can even learn how to impart training to create skilled people in the clothing industry.

Director of the Department of Fashion Design and Management at the Pingtung University, Yeh Tseng-chin said that several functional textiles that have gained popularity in the recent years have been created in Taiwan. These, he said, includes fabrics which are anti-bacterial, moisture-absorbing, sun-protective, deodorant, electromagnetic resistant and those possessing a cooling effect.

He further said that long years devoted for vocational education is the secret behind the superb performance of the Taiwanese designers in various international competitions in recent years.

Better garment designs and production skills have helped the Taiwanese clothing industry to transform itself into a technology and knowledge-based fashion design industry from a textile materials industry, Yeh added.

He said that clothes found in Taiwan are mainly those produced in China or South Korea. Their popularity is due to they being easy on pocket, but actually the garments made in Taiwan are finer in terms of material as well as design, he added.
