Eco-friendly Diwali at Pearl Academy of Fashion

Diwali is a festival associated with wealth and there exists a universal belief that the festival is an auspicious occasion to purchase new products. In an effort to minimize waste and keep the festive expenditure down, students from Pearl Academy of Fashion (PAF) have devised a unique concept of celebrating the festival in an eco- friendly manner by recycling old or unused household items.
Mr. S Ramalingam, Director, Pearl Academy of Fashion, Chennai said “People keep buying new clothes during festivals and have piles of old and unused garments. They are always ready to throw out old clothes, linen or textiles and almost never consider recycling as an alternative option. Not only can this help ease pressure on the family's budget, but can also help reduce the environmental impact.”Fashion Design students from Pearl Academy of Fashion conducted a workshop on Recycling, where they demonstrated how old fabrics can be recycled to make new products.
Mr. Ramalingam further added “Eco-friendly is the buzz word among apparel makers across the globe as well as in India. Leading apparel brands like Wills Lifestyle, Woodland, Van Heusen and Benetton have introduced eco-friendly clothing lines to woo the environment-conscious customer. To keep in line with the emerging market trend, PAF conducted a workshop to render skills on the long forgotten art of recycling.”
So, this Diwali do shop for all the stylish and fashionable items that you need but do not forget to first recycle the old items lying at home! Let us all pledge to make this Diwali a more environmentally friendly one. Let the 'riches' of this initiative be enjoyed by generations of Indians to come.
