Pearl Academy of Fashion, India's leading Fashion and Design Institute, joined hands with India Vision Foundation and Navjyoti India foundation to style a Fashion show “Kids on RAMP- age” at Select City Walk Mall, which witnessed a unique ramp walk by 20 children of inmates of Tihar Jail.

Kids on Rampage is an annual event, supported by Dr. Kiran Bedi ,in an effort to enable underpriviliged children to experience the life of their suburban peers and be encouraged to fearlessly pursue their own dreams. Dr. Bedi welcomed the audience with an inaugural speech at the one- of – its – kind kids fashion show which turned the spotlight on the children and let them shine as stars in their own right.

Mr. AKG Nair, Group Director, Pearl Academy of Fashion, who walked the ramp along with the children, said “The mission is to create a supportive environment for these children from remedial schools and bring positive attributes and happiness in their lives. At PAF, we believe that Fashion and Design are integral part of life and the aesthetics they lend into our day-to-day life can make a bring joy to everyone.

We have also been working towards the empowerment of women prisoners at Tihar Jail by teaching them weaving and entrepreneurial skills. These programs have two-way benefit wherein students get to understand a different aspect of design and we get to share our expertise with these women who not only have a new sense of purpose but can also use these skills when they are released.”

Ms. Seema Mahajan, HOD, Textile Design, Pearl Academy of Fashion, who has led many projects at Tihar Jail added “Pearl Academy of Fashion has been working with the Tihar Jail for over 3 years on a project titled 'Weaving Behind Bars', which aims at empowering women prisoners. Skills learned in the jail help the women gain financial independence after their release and is a way of restoring their self confidence and utilizing their time constructively.

Pearl Academy of Fashion lends its design capabilities to help inmates realize their true potential and express themselves to the world through creativity and design. The sense of fulfilment of being part of this initiative is simply amazing – for all the stakeholders concerned be it the students, lecturers or women inmates.”

The children, aged between 6 to 17 years of age, were styled by PAF students- who funded the ramp walk with their own money and donations collected from within the institute. The styling fundamentals were based on showcasing the inner strength of the children and giving them a channel of expression to boost their confidence levels.

Pearl Academy of Fashion was founded in 1993. It is a leading fashion and design education institute in India.
