The opening of the show was the signature tune of All India Radio with four kurta clad male models walking the ramp holding lanterns. Then to the tune of popular Bollywood hits of the 50s and 60s, Debarun Mukherjee took the audience into the past on a journey of retro life, with his collection “Bygone” when he wove a magical nostalgic story on the ramp at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012.

With pure white as his colour base, Debarun's simplicity and purity of the collection emerged with gentle touches of hues that revived memories of the past. Sky, mountain brown, lake blue, pink, tangerine, yellow and forest green as lining added depth to the different fabrics and textures. Beautiful Chanderi, Dupion silk, delicate crushed mulmul and luxurious Indian cottons gave life to the creations under the arc lights.

With cut work as the main embellishments in various designs; the creations had a beautiful pristine quality which will be ideal for the rising mercury during the coming months. The clear simple silhouettes inspired by the 50s and 60s were for kaftans with interesting churi sleeves, kurtas, flared trousers teamed with cropped tops, “A” line skirts and blouses, form fitting suits, saris and fish tail sari ghagras.

The flared double layered dress with cutwork and ribbon embroidery worn with peach crinkled slim pants, the cutwork kameez and slim trousers and the Chanderi cutwork fish tail lehenga with sari inspired drape were stunners on the catwalk.

For the five men's wear entries, Debarun created kurtas, suits, comfy drawstring flared pants and stylish shirt kurtas. Adding some intricate detailing, Debarun had cutwork as well as patch work designs, broken patterns and fabric embroidery. Ending the show was the spritely star of the hit movie “Rock On”, Shahana Goswami, who appeared in a silk mulmul crushed sari with exquisite cutwork.

For lovers of retro style the “Bygone” collection by Debarun Mukherjee will revive the memories and styles of the past.
