Giorgio Armani, the seventy-seven year old doyen of Italian fashion, has unveiled the outfits that are to be worn by the country's team at the forthcoming London Olympics, scheduled to begin on July 27.

The ace fashion designer has created the suits under the Emporio Armani EA7 sports label. These would be worn by the 280-member Italian Olympic contingent at the opening ceremony as well as other formal occasions.

The new designs were displayed by 15 members of the Italian Olympic team including five-time medalist fencer Valentina Vezzali.

For the Olympic sports suits, Armani has avoided excessive use of the white, red and green – the colours of the Italian flag. However, he has incorporated a patriotic gesture by embroidering in gold the first lines of Italy's national anthem at two places – on the back of the collars of polo shirts and on the inside lining of the uniform jackets.

The designer has chosen a shade of blue that is much darker than the usual azure or sky blue associated with Italian national sports teams.

The 50-piece collection of dark blue and white clothing will be given to all athletes participating in 2012 summer Olympics.

It is a beautiful idea to combine fashion with sports, said Armani during the launch of the new collection.

The fashion guru is the third designer to officially unveil clothing designs for Olympic team. American fashion designer Ralph Lauren was the first to officially launch Olympic uniform kit for Team USA, followed by British designer Stella McCartney unveiling the uniform designs for UK Olympic team.

Every set of Armani kit will consist of asymmetrically-zipped official tracksuit, Bermuda shorts and a selection of shirts, T-shirts, shoes and trousers.

Armed with Armani creations, Italy's Olympic Committee hopes to bag the title for the best-dressed contingent at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
