“The textile and apparel industry is facing its own share of professional hiccups like plagiarism and with time and increase in public awareness regarding the astute penalties that are being ignored in the present climate will see a stronger enforcement of systems, which will further benefit both the consumer and the owner of the intellectual property and thus will create a new platform for the next generation of content builders in all walks of design,” says an optimist Mr. Rathore.

Explaining how the issue of fashion plagiarism can be tackled, he opines, “The message of respecting intellectual properties should be disseminated across all levels with the hope of avoiding open hijack of original work. Besides, it is important for the designers to discuss these issues so as to understand the amount of effort and resources that go into creating original content and to understand as a society the importance of original design.”

The designer adds that a good legal understanding of intellectual property protection and a system that is agile and active in curbing with a preventive approach rather than a system that kicks in after the breach takes place can solve the problem. “The idea should be to discourage people from taking such actions as they should be aware of the severe repercussions,” he concludes.
