As Lacoste gets ready to celebrate its 80th anniversary, the spring/summer 2013 collection allows Felipe Oliveira Baptista, the brand’s creative director, to more than ever establish the legendary sportswear label onto the contemporary scene.

Lacoste presents its Spring Summer 2013 Collection at New York Fashion Week runway.

A filigree version of René Lacoste’s mythical blazer comes tiptoeing back into the summer wardrobe while Felipe Oliveira Baptista, with a stroke of lightness and humor, endows the label with original new prints inspired by the brand’s iconic elements (tennis balls, rackets and courts, crocodiles…) which are arranged along a quasi kinetic pattern, thereby giving the illusion of plain all-over prints.

A capsule collection, consisting of 12 women’s and men’s polo shirts, will display these new prints in various colors.

Relentlessly adding to LACOSTE’s graphic identity, Felipe Oliveira Baptista went through the house archives from the 1980s, where he found the inspiration for his asymmetrical color blocks applied to oversize t-shirts. Flowing lines, comfortable luxury and a certain pragmatism are what transpire from the creative director’s new direction.

In a humorous tribute to the 80s, Felipe Oliveira Baptista adapts today’s standards of refinement to that crucial element of sportswear: the jogging suit. The fanny pack also makes an appearance under printed shirts and matching pants.

For women, the looser polo dress comes in crocodile-embossed white nappa leather laminated onto jersey. Introducing graphics within a predominantly light wardrobe, the asymmetrical color blocks are subtly worked as intarsia into the jersey dresses.

Faithful to René Lacoste’s tradition of developing techno-sport fabrics, the collection offers a plastic raincoat whose seams are welded instead of stitched.

The Cathy bag, inspired by Catherine Lacoste’s golf bag, is remodeled into a more functional tote, while the men’s sneakers, with their iconic 80s style, place the brand somewhere between sportswear and streetwear without downplaying the LACOSTE heritage.

The collection offers a rich chromatic palette which, rooted in pure white, moves on to assimilate pearly greys, pale yellows and light blues. Contrasts are high, brought on by the navy, red, electric blue and dark orange that are mixed with the lighter tones of the collection.
