The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has been engaged to organize a fashion show at the ongoing National Handloom Expo in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the eastern state of Odisha.
As such several models donned in khadi and other handloom outfits would rock the stage at National Handloom Expo on January 27, Textiles and Handloom Secretary Usha Padhee said while briefing media.
Noting that handloom products are widely in demand in foreign countries, Ms. Padhee said they are working for promotion of Indian handloom items at international level, and would soon arrange to showcase these items at expos in Bangladesh, Fiji and Sri Lanka.
Textiles and Handloom Minister Sarojini Hembram said the government eyes a business of around Rs. 60 million from the fair, up from the business of Rs. 50 million and Rs. 36 million done over the last two years.
Primary agencies, NGOs, individual weavers and master designers from 16 Indian states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Gujarat are showcasing their work across 200 stalls at the expo that would run till February 10.
