Bath's Fashion Museum to display 18th century fashion

Jan '14
A delightfully nostalgic trip into the gleaming realms of 18th century fashion will be offered at the Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Fashion Museum from January 25, 2014 to January 1, 2015.

The exhibit will highlight the finest of ensembles worn by high-society men and women to the famous assemblies and other glittering occasions, which were held at Georgian Assembly Rooms, located in the World Heritage Site of Bath, during the reign of King George III.

The display will include an exclusive range of more than 30 original outfits and ensembles, such as richly patterned colourful woven silk gowns as well as embroidered coats and waistcoats, sourced from the museum’s archived and preserved collections.

Dubbed as ‘Georgians: 18th century dress for polite society’, the exhibition’s major attraction includes three exquisite wide-skirted court dresses (dating back to the 1750s and 60s), replete with cane-support panniers attached inside.

Also an exceptional showcase of 18th century-inspired designs from five eminent designers like Anna Sui, Meadham Kirchhoff, Vivienne Westwood, Stephen Jones, and AlexanderMcQueen will be put up on display at the event.

An Assembly was defined at the time as a stated and general meeting of the polite persons of both sexes for the sake of conversation, gallantry, news and play. As Bath grew in popularity in the 18th century, there was a need for a grand Assembly Room in the fashionable upper town, and in 1771 the New Rooms, designed by John Wood the Younger and financed by public subscription, opened to the public. Today, the New Rooms are known as the Assembly Rooms and are the location of the world-famous Fashion Museum.
