El Salvador’s National Commission for Micro and Small Enterprises (CONAMYPE) recently organized a handmade fashion show called ‘Opulence Pipil’, said to be the first such event in the country.

At the show, national and international models walked the ramp wearing garments and accessories that were handmade using local raw materials, which reflected the creativity, innovation and quality that Salvadoran artisans and craftsmen impregnated in each piece, CONAMYPE said in a press release.

Armando Flores, the Minister of Economy and chairman of CONAMYPE, said the basic objective of First Craft Parade was to have a marketing platform for high quality handicraft products. The event was planned with the aim of establishing trading links with prestigious firms in the country as well as with commercial attachés of other countries accredited in El Salvador, and other key stakeholders that can facilitate the opening of new channels of marketing of such products, especially to international embassies.

He said the event was also designed to create value through the crafts of haute couture, and to raise public awareness about the importance of craft as utilitarian products in everyday life.

Roxana Abrego, executive director CONAMYPE, said the products displayed at the event were produced by about 37 artisans and craftsmen from different parts of the country. The 37 artisans were supported by CONAMYPE by providing the services of an expert designer, who gave them support and counseling for more than three months to develop the products with innovative handmade designs, made using fabric and yarn, among other things.

At the fashion show ‘Opulence Pipil’, audience was able to see about 30 complete sets of clothing and accessories made with artisanal raw material. There was a true innovation in every garment presented, which showed the highest quality of craftsmanship.

The event is expected to be organized every year, to provide a window for Salvadoran artisans and craftsmen to exhibit their crafts.
