French haute couture welcomes unisex designs

For the first time in the history of French haute couture, an unusual couture collection of unisex clothing has been showcased.

At the just held couture week in Paris, the 31-year-old Canadian couturier Rad Hourani presented his gender-blurring Spring/Summer 2014 designs.

Mentored under the tutelage of Christian Dior president Sydney Toledano, the Jordan-born and Paris-based designer created a melange of both masculine and feminine silhouettes in his creations.

Based on black, some of the notable androgynous pieces in the collection were sharply tailored jackets, leather leggings, soft jumpers and a jacket that could be transformed into a backpack and a corset.

Hourani, who had launched his unisex ready-to-wear line RAD by Rad Hourani in Paris in 2007, was invited by the French fashion industry governing body Chambre Syndicale de la haute couture’s President Didier Grumbach to feature his designs at the Parisian event.
