Narciso Rodriguez, the New York City fashion designer, has been chosen as this year’s winner of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s annual National Design Awards title in fashion category.

The 53-year-old designer will be awarded, along with a list of top 10 other names in various disciplines of design including architecture, communication and product design, at a prestigious ceremony, due to take place on October 9, 2014.

The New York museum website says the designer has “redefined American style for the past two decades, playing a singular role in global fashion through his structured and elegantly minimal designs. Rodriguez incorporates a simple, sophisticated sensibility—he makes modern classic clothing that functions both practically and aesthetically.”

A three-time CFDA Awards winner, Rodriguez is also being named in Time magazine’s ‘25 Most Influential Hispanics in America’ and is a proud recipient of Pratt Institute’s Fashion Icon Award.

The Parsons’ alumnus has designed costumes for several films and is a common name among celebrities like Michelle Obama. The US First Lady wore a dress from the designer’s spring 2009 collection during Barack Obama’s triumphant victory as the first African American president of The United States.

Apart from Rodriguez, the other recipients of the 15th annual National Design Awards are Witold Rybczynsk (writer), Aaron Koblin (interaction designer), Roman and Williams (interior design company) and LUNAR (engineering firm).

First hosted at the White House in 2000 as a project of the White House Millennium Council, the National Design Awards were established to promote design as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world. The awards are accompanied each year by a variety of public education programs, including special events, panel discussions and workshops.
