The Indian fashion designer Rahul Mishra recently launched his 2013/2014 International Woolmark Prize winning collection at Australia’s high-end department store chain David Jones.

Inspired from the works of Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, the six-piece range featuring handcrafted embroidery is made from 100 percent superfine Merino wool of around 17 microns.

Replete with beautifully tailored and sculpturally designed pieces, the collection includes a cape-style jacket and a fitted tube-style dress.

The ensembles’ graphically designed embroidery tells a story of the evolution from an eight-petal lotus, exploring the metamorphosis of the shape, which morphs into complex structures, representing the city landscape.

While speaking on the launch, Donna Player, the Group Executive Merchandise David Jones, says, “We are very pleased to be presenting this unique collection which carries with it such a great story of success, to our customers at David Jones.”

The Woolmark Company Managing Director Stuart McCullough also stated, “The award highlights how innovative Merino wool is and Rahul Mishra’s winning collection is a fine example of this. Having retail partners such as David Jones support the award and commercialise the product encourages emerging talent and reaffirms the Woolmark brand’s deep connection with the international fashion industry.”

Apart from David Jones, the Rahul Mishra International Woolmark Prize collection retails internationally in Harvey Nichols (London), Saks Fifth Avenue (New York), 10 Corso Como (Milan), Colette (Paris), Joyce (Hong Kong), Isetan Mitsukoshi (Japan) and online at mytheresa.com

While expressing his delight on his designs being stocked at leading international retailers, Mishra explains “I am thrilled to be stocked in some of the best retailers in the world thanks to The Woolmark Company. It is going to be really great for our brand on the commercial front, getting into these stores is a dream for any designer. The international exposure since winning the award has been immense and has provided us global coverage like never before.”

Before launching the collection at David Jones, the young designer, who recently debuted at Paris Fashion Week’s S/S 15 calendar, showcased the award winning wool crafted range at a woolshed near Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.

“The farm visit was inspiring and humbling, seeing the environment where the fibre starts from and the people and animals that grow it has convinced me even more why wool is the perfect sustainable fibre for the future not just for winter but warmer months as well,” said the designer after the woolshed show.

Started in 1953, the International Woolmark Prize crosses borders and cultures and has been revived for a new generation of emerging talents that continue to look at new ways to take wool into the future. (PB)
