Design Museum celebrates the importance of power dressing

An exhibit, showcasing how the concept of power dressing has been used by influential women as a strategic tool to assert power in the male-dominated world, has opened at London’s international contemporary design dedicated facility, Design Museum.
Slated to run through April 26, 2015, the display titled ‘Women Fashion Power’ aims to highlight how princesses, models, CEOs, Dames and designers across the globe have used fashion to define and enhance their position in the world.
The exhibits include an array of unique historical pieces of clothing worn as means of self-expression and empowerment to build reputation, attract attention and assert authority by eminent public figures.
Curated by the fashion historian and journalist Colin McDowell, the exhibition, which is spread over an area of about 6,500 square feet, is divided into three parts.
The first section’ corridor of power’ showcases some 16 of the most significant women in history who created their own exceptional styles to establish authority. The exhibit features contemporary powerful personalities like Hillary Rodham Clinton and the ancient power dressers like the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut who infused male dressing elements into her wardrobe after the death of her husband Thutmose II.
The second part focuses on the historically important moments that have helped in shaping the power dressing styles of today. This segment offers an up and close view into incidents like the shunning of corsets by women and the trouser wearing trend pioneered by American newspaper editor, Amelia Jenks Bloomer, in 1851.
The last gallery displays clothing donned by some of the 25 current power players of the world including Natalie Massenet (executive chairwoman of Net-a-Porter), designer Vivienne Westwood, model Naomi Campbell, Wei Sun Christianson (co-chief executive of Morgan Stanley Asia Pacific), Anne Hidalgo (the mayor of Paris), Alfiya Kuanysheva (chief executive of the Kazakhstan finance group BATT) and the British broadcaster, Kirsty Wark.
