The team of Ghana Fashion and Design Week (GFDW) has joined forces with some of the esteemed Ghanaian design universities to launch a new platform to support the country’s young graduate entrepreneurs.

The New Talent Spot Initiative Space will work in collaboration with the nation’s higher education institutions dedicated to fashion, design and creative arts courses to promote the works of outstanding fashion design and talented creative arts graduates.

Aiming to provide creative business support and guidance through the platform’s inclusive activities and professional support from the industry partners, the initiative will serve as an incubator for creative development transition and business continuity to facilitate sustainable job creation post graduation.

The platform also aims to encourage fashion and creative arts students to challenge their creative abilities, perfect learned skills and embrace technology to push their creative barriers for innovation to achieve their career goals and establish a global recognition.

The first to be selected for the programme is designer Afua Biney from the Radford University College (RUC) in Ghana. The new fashion design student’s graduation collection embodies her ability to translate complex creative thinking into simplified reality, exhibiting skills and quality in production which is relevant to a wider market outside the country.

While speaking about the inspiration behind her collection, Biney says, “My inspiration was from Death, and narrowed down to Egyptian Mummies. The Wrap up collection is targeted at the Chic modern woman, who appreciates and quality.”

She also expressed her delight on being selected for the New Talent Spot Initiative Space, “This opportunity is another stepping stone into the fashion industry world, and another experience for me to participate in a big fashion show in my own country.”

Ghana Fashion & Design Week is an innovative platform for commerce and is responsible for placing the African nation on the international fashion week map. To date, the event has introduced several new and emerging designers to an international audience. (PB)
