Harris Tweed Hebrides, the hand-woven cloth from Scotland, in collaboration with the Scotch whiskey brand Jonny Walker Black Label, has come up with a new range of smart fabrics that reflect the colours of the whisky ingredients.

Developed using the microencapsulation technology by Edinburgh-based Heriot-Watt University’s textile technology experts, the line carries a unique scent called Aqua Alba which replicates the aromas released from a glass of whisky, known as the nose of the liquid.

The chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides and former UK Trade Minister, Brian Wilson, spoke about the collaborative design venture in a statement, “This is a very natural partnership of two great Scottish brands with input from one of our cutting-edge academic centres. The more of these partnerships we can promote, the better for the Scottish economy. The early indications are that the finished products are creating a high level of interest in the target markets.”

Commenting on the new association, the business development manager at the university’s School of Textiles and Design, Jim McVee said, “Smart textiles are a fast-developing sector that offers enormous potential. Our year-long collaboration with Harris Tweed Hebrides (HTH) is a great example of the ways in which we can help Scottish textile companies to develop their business, add value to their textiles and bring exciting new products to market.”

“Fabric technologists at the School of Textiles & Design in Galashiels, developed the prototypes and finishing expertise which will enable HTH to offer products using this technology in future further enhancing the USP of this heritage fabric range,” he reveals.

The UK educational institution’s textile experts have helped to develop a process that allowed the scent to be layered into the fabric throughout the finishing process, so that it is permanently imbued in the tweed.

The microencapsulation technology was earlier used in a therapeutic, healthcare context, especially for cancer patients.

The Harris Tweed cloth is made from pure virgin wool which is dyed, spun, woven and finished in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Protected by the Harris Tweed Act of Parliament 1993, the genuine fabrics come with an authentification certifying Harris Tweed Orb Mark issued by the industry’s governing body Harris Tweed Authority. The cloth has been recognised with several accolades over the years, including a Scottish Ambassador of the Year award at the eighth edition of Scottish Fashion Awards held in 2013 in London.

Incepted in 1820, Johnnie Walker is one of the most widely distributed brands of blended Scotch whisky in the world. The label is sold almost in every country, with annual sales reaching over 130 million bottles. (PB)
