A treasure trove of family textiles that commemorates the three most important milestones of a family, including births, marriages and deaths, have been put up on display at the American Museum in Britain.

Titled as Hatched, Matched, Dispatched and Patched, the event showcases pieces ranging from bridal gowns and mourning garments to hand-stitched quilts that have been passed on from one generation to the next.

Some of the featured exhibits include mourning quilts from American Civil War, including the black and white Darts of Death or Widow’s Quilt and an Album Quilt Top featuring Lady Liberty with the Union flag.

Also an unfinished 1945 tablecloth embroidered by the British fiancée of an American soldier involved in D-Day landings, an 1887 wedding dress (worn by the mother-in-law of American socialite Wallis Simpson, Agnes Lucy Hughes) as well as some handmade broderie anglaise lace crafted christening robes have also become a part of the display in the Bath museum.

Due to run through November 1, 2015, the exhibits have been sourced from the museum’s own collections as well as Beamish Museum, Jersey Museum and Art Gallery, Quilters’ Guild, and the Jen Jones Collection. (PB)
