Raj Shekharan triumphs at Intl jewelry design contest

A final year student, Raj Shekharan, of India's premier designing institute, the National Institute of Design, (NID) Ahmedabad, doing the apparel designing and merchandising course, won an award at the 45th Japan Fashion Design Contest for a jewelry design. The ornament was made of silver and glass.
Raj Shekharan, a modest looking person, with a vision to deliver the best, participated in the 45th Japan Fashion Design Contest. His design was among the 12 of 416 to get short listed for the finals.
Raj himself asserted, “The design was sent without any 3D details that are generally required in explaining such jewelry. So, it was truly surprising, that one of my designs out of the two, caught the eyes of the selectors. It really added to my confidence, when I realized that the jury had understood the design in that simple hand made sketch and got through me to the finals”.
The biggest stumbling block was, when he came to know that he had to carry, to Japan, a prototype of the design in right size made from white gold and diamonds. He conveyed the organizers his inability to make a specimen in those two costly metals. There after, he got the permission to craft the same in silver and glass.
To add to his astonishment, the jury selected his creation among the final five designs.
The title of his design 'Pollen', basically inspired from nature, was also selected by National Design Business Incubator for Design Idea Fair 2007. This exquisite piece of ornament was displayed at CII-NID design summit held in Bangalore, last December.
