Stahl Asia Pacific's Shoe Finish Division held its first Shoe Finishing Technical seminar in the new application laboratory in Shanghai, China, at the beginning of November.

Among delegates attending the three day event were representatives from Clarks, one of the world's top shoe manufacturing companies producing shoes in Vietnam and China.

The training course was run with an informal approach providing time for the group to become acquainted with each other. The diverse group of nationalities on the course included Chinese, Brazilian, Taiwanese and English drawn from broad and varied backgrounds allied to the shoe making process.

Developed and managed by Fernando Walther, Sales Manager for the region, and Jerry Wu and Gary Gao, Sales Technicians, the course included both practical and theoretical content. A thorough explanation of the shoe making process was given and showed the advantages of shoe dressings applied to a wide variety of sole and upper materials.

Trouble shooting was explained, illustrating the reasons for and importance of careful preparation and testing of the coatings to ensure that they are suitable for the different substrates.

Fashionable effects created in the practical application session included burnishing, polishing and brush off effects, and the more classical application of creams and waxes to enhance the gloss and feel of the surface of the footwear.

Excellent feedback was received from the course delegates who were highly impressed with the shoe finishes being demonstrated. All felt that the course had been very worthwhile and each had learned more about product enhancement and the addition of value that shoe dressing, when applied using controlled conditions and the right products, can make.
