• Overseas sales of apparel and textile industry combined are worth £6.2 billion at manufacturers prices • UK designers sell an estimated £750 million of clothing at manufacturers prices, of which 2/3 is exported • Major export sectors are USA, Japan, Russia, France, Italy, Middle East, Hong Kong, China • At retail level, spending on clothing accounts for 5% of expenditure on all consumer items • In 2007, the clothing industry fuelled £146million of employment revenue • Consumer expenditure on textiles and clothing goods in 2007 totaled over £50million • The clothing industry is particularly important in terms of its widespread location and its high female employment - approximately 70% of employees in the clothing industry are women. It also makes a significant contribution to ethnic minority and inner city employment.
