The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has taken upon itself the task of setting up its center in northeast Shillong this year, for encouraging traditional skills in the region.

Details of the proposal are being drafted for the center while the selected sites have already been approved for the purpose. Rajiv Takru, NIFT Director General, told the media that the institute is waiting for a clearance signal from the Union Government so that academic sessions can be conducted from this year itself.

Mr Takru also asserted that the first session of the foremost NIFT center in north-east is likely to commence by June or July this year. Besides, he also pointed out that the institute will offer a range of courses like two-year post graduate, four-year graduate and short duration courses to the students.

The initial admission for each of these courses will be limited to 40 students per course. Meghalaya chief secretary Ranjan Chatterjee supported this entire proposal with a view that Shillong has an inherent advantage of making a fashion statement in the country and was therefore an ideal destination for establishing the NIFT institute.

Setting up of NIFT in Shillong will ensure that students in the region, wanting to pursue their career in fashion, will find the opportunity in their state itself. Moreover, the state Government will also find ways to fund those lacking sufficient financial strength for taking up the courses.
