Yves Saint Laurent, the much acclaimed French designer of the 20th century, passed away at 71 on June 1 in Paris after having suffered illness for sometime.

This fashion virtuoso, who was awarded the French Legion d'Honneur, was one of the very few who dominated the 20th century fashion.

Surprisingly, at the tender age of 17, he already had a solid portfolio of sketches when he first arrived in Paris in 1953. For as many as four decades, Yves pioneered his trade and it was only in 2002 that he announced his retirement at the 40th anniversary of his couture house.

However, for all those of his active years, Yves was seen at par with such eminent fashion icons as Christian Dior, Coco, Chanel and Paul Poiret.

The 1960, marked by its characteristic appetite for originality saw Yves set about founding his own couture house that highlighted creations of the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear label and perfume, as well as astute licensing deals for accessories and perfumes.

His very own 'YSL' logo became synonymous with latest trends prevalent at the time providing him with that success ladder which he even more successfully climbed by expanding into Japan with South Korea and Taiwan on the waiting list.

The death of Yves is a huge loss to the global fashion industry since it will take uncountable millenniums to find another Saint Laurent for revolutionizing this growing sector.
