Pianist Donna Friedman to perform at Couture Fashion Week

Audiences at the upcoming Couture Fashion Week event in New York City will not only be dazzled by the exquisite fashions on the runway, but also by a roster of world-class entertainers.

The three-day event, to be held September 5, 6 and 7, 2008, will present the latest collections by designers from countries including Romania, Egypt, Turkey, Colombia, Albania, Australia and the USA in the Majestic Ballroom of the elegant Westin Times Square Hotel, in the heart of the Big Apple.

One of the performers scheduled to appear at Couture Fashion Week is pianist Donna Weng Friedman who has excited audiences all over the world with her dynamic temperament and charismatic style.

She has performed as soloist with the Atlanta Symphony, Shanghai Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New Jersey Symphony to mention a few.

Ms. Weng Friedman has concertized extensively throughout China, South America, Europe and the United States. She made her New York recital debut at the 92nd Street Y in the “Horizons” series.

Her performing credits include recitals at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Caramoor Music Festival, Symphony Hall in Shanghai, the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, Florida, Le Jeu de Paume in Fontainebleau, France and Tillett Gardens in St. Thomas, USVI.

Ms. Weng Friedman has performed as guest artist with the Orchestra of St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble at Caramoor, Bargemusic, Weill Recital Hall, and Merkin Concert Hall, and has collaborated with clarinetist David Shifrin, violinist Mark Peskanov, violist Paul Neubauer, and cellist Carter Brey.

Ms. Weng Friedman has conducted master classes at the Beijing and Shanghai Conservatories and has been on the faculty of the Mannes College of Music Preparatory Division since 1989.

An American of Chinese heritage, she began her musical education at the age of seven in the Pre-college Division of the acclaimed Juilliard School where she was awarded the Robert Armstrong Memorial Award for outstanding performance.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Princeton University where she was a University Scholar and was awarded the Sachs Scholarship Award for outstanding performance upon graduation.

She received a Master's of Music degree from the Juilliard School as a student of Adele Marcus, and was a winner of the highly coveted Gina Bachauer piano competition. A winner of the William Petschek Award at the Juilliard School, she studied chamber music with Felix Galimir, piano and composition with Nadia Boulanger, and had the privilege of coaching with pianist Radu Lupu.

Her performances have been hailed by media around the world including the Evening Bulletin (Beijing, China), The Shanghai Press, The Record and Star Ledger (New Jersey) and The Philadelphia Inquirer which wrote: “Ms. Weng Friedman has temperament, individuality, a massive digital technique and superb control of dynamics”

Ms. Weng Friedman is the music supervisor and pianist for the award winning film documentaries Frames of Life, Living Liberty and Morris Engel: The Independent.

Ms. Weng Friedman has been invited to perform in and preside as the Artistic Director for the Music, Art and Technology Festival to take place in Shanghai, China during the Shanghai Expo 2010.
