Audiences at the upcoming Couture Fashion Week event in New York City will not only be dazzled by the exquisite fashions on the runway, but also by a roster of world-class entertainers.

The three-day event, to be held September 5, 6 and 7, 2008, will present the latest collections by designers from countries including Romania, Egypt, Turkey, India, Colombia, Albania, Australia and the USA in the Majestic Ballroom of the elegant Westin Times Square Hotel, in the heart of the Big Apple.

One of the stellar performers scheduled to appear at Couture Fashion Week is classical cellist Gjilberta Gelaj.

A native of Albania, Gjilberta began cello studies at age six. At age thirteen she won the National Young Artist Competition.

As a result she was the youngest student ever to be chosen to tour in Italy with the Shkoder Symphony Orchestra. The highlights of the tour included playing for Pope John Paul II and receiving a full scholarship from the Padova Conservatorio di Musica.

Under a full scholarship, Gjilberta went on to attend the Music Conservatory at SUNY Purchase College where she studied with Peter Wiley of the Guarnieri Quartet and graduated with a BFA in Music Performance.

Soon after, she was accepted into the Mannes College of music in Manhattan and most recently, Gjilberta received a Masters in Music Education from the Steinhardt School of Education at NYU.

Gjilberta performed at Carnegie Hall as a member of the “Passionata Trio” in 2002 and 2003 and has given numerous solo, chamber music and orchestral performances throughout New York, New Jersey, Boston and Miami.

In 2006, she became a member of the New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed frequently at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fischer Hall, and has toured extensively in South Korea. She has participated and performed in many master classes including with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Gjilberta is a cello/violin faculty member of C Note Music School, Kilroy Music Studios Production and Abrons Art Center, NY.

She has taught extensively in her native country and United States. She is proud to be a Charter Member-Associate Artist of Hudson Valley Piano Club.

Gjilberta's dream is to open a music school for the underprivileged and emotionally abused children.
