Fashion gala encourages young designers to polish sewing skills

The annual Teenage Fashion Design Competition held on August 27 at the House of Apparel Technology met with rave reviews from audience and judges alike.

A party dress designed on a Chinese wedding gown, designed by Helen Leung, a final year student at Sacred Heart College, won her the first prize during the fashion contest.

The event saw participation by 20 high school students who were required to use their innovative sewing skills to design a classic white dress in accordance with the instructions given and then tailor it into a sizzling party gown.

The panel of judges comprised garment industry heads and Government officials who seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the fashion gala.

The winning dress by Ms Leung displayed both creativity as well as finesse, imparting sophistication to the garment, making it worthy of being worn at a special occasion. The dress complete with a train and embroidered collar was styled on Chinese wedding dresses, particularly those that are popular in Shanghai.

Leung was awarded 1,500 patacas and a sewing machine for winning the competition and a chance to represent Macau in the biannual World Skills International also known as the Skill Olympics, in Calgary, Canada next year, along with the two runners-up.

Moreover, the top three dresses were also put on sale yesterday at the parade to mark the opening of Macau's Fashion week at the Four Seasons Hotel.

The competition was a great encouragement to students who got the opportunity to not only polish their sewing skills but to think creatively about fashion. Sponsored by the industry and the Government, the House of Apparel Technology aims to transform the garment manufacturing sector of Macau into a more adept design based market, as only this could help it stand firm against international competition.
