Ethiopia is one of the key producer and exporter of raw or semi-processed leather hides in the world. Leather industry is the country's third largest foreign currency earner.

Another feather in the cap for this sector is that Ethiopian Suede Leather is considered to be the finest kind in the world.

Recognizing this, the Government took the initiative to promote production and export of finished leather goods that will gross in better profits.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have also supported this venture by Ethiopia.

Now, this country is focusing on building brands and extending them to developed nations in the EU and the US that are considered to be fashion hubs.

One such brand that is seen emerging at leading retail chains is Taytu. This is the label incorporated by a group twelve Ethiopian manufacturers of leather, leather goods, shoes and textile in 2006.

Taytu made its presence known by presenting its Spring/Summer 2008 collection in New York at The Train Fashion Trade Show, held from September 16 to 18, 2007.

According to company sources, Taytu has signed contract with Barneys and its products are now made available at New York outlet.

Experts say that although Taytu luxury leather bags and accessories are chic, modern and innovative, they do not fail to reflect the soul of African continent. Thus, these items are fully capable of impressing the fashionistas around the world.
