 On May 22, Rebagz Eco-Chic Handbags will make their debut on QVC, the largest television home shopping network in the U.S., at 5 p.m. Eastern/2 p.m. Pacific. Three designs of Rebagz' Small Cinchy Tote will be featured on the channel's "Green Living" show: "Magnolia," "Jasmine" and "Sun Rice," all colorful and perfect for springtime. "Our clients say that the tote's curvy style and its convenient size make it a great summer bag," says Rebagz creator Marty Stevens-Heebner, who's also president of Half the Sky Designs LLC, the company that makes the bags.
"QVC is the perfect showcase for our beautiful bags because it provides us with the chance to tell our story to millions of home shoppers," says Stevens-Heebner. "We believe in style as much as sustainability and I hope that by reaching QVC's large audience we'll get more shoppers to think about how their handbags are made and who's making them."
Rebagz' unique handbags, made under fair trade conditions from vibrant recycled juice packs and rice sacks, have become so popular since their summer 2007 launch that they're now sold in over 400 stores in five different countries. Rebagz have been featured in dozens of magazines in the U.S. and internationally, as well as on hit TV shows.
America Ferrera has worn Rebagz' Multi-Colored Large Tie Tote on several episodes of "Ugly Betty." Other celebrities who have Rebagz include Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Kate Walsh and Serena Williams, and many others.
The Rebagz line was recently expanded to include the Wrap Around Bag, the T-Zoid Clutch, and The Keeper, which is perfect for cameras and cell phones. Rebagz continues to offer favorite silhouettes like the Cinchy Tote, Pop Top Bag, Sleek Tote and Messenger Bag.
Stevens-Heebner has a talent for designing not only handbags, but shoes as well. Her passion for turning trash into fashion inspired her to write "Altered Shoes: A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Footwear Fabulous". The new book provides easy step-by-step instructions to re-fashion your old shoes into unique and beautiful new styles, and also includes the author's interviews with women who talk about their favorite shoes.
"Our shoes and handbags accompany us on our journeys through life," says Stevens-Heebner. "Having our bags on QVC is a thrilling leap on our journey."
A world traveler and former human rights worker, Stevens-Heebner works closely with the people in the Philippines who make her handbags, ensuring proper treatment and fair pay. She also donates one dollar from every Rebagz order to Global Exchange (www.globalexchange.org), a humanitarian organization she has worked with in Chiapas, Mexico.
Stevens-Heebner will be one of the recipients of the California Small Business Award, which is given to recognize the contributions of the small businesses that make California thrive, on May 26 in Sacramento, Calif. She was selected for this award by State Senator Carol Liu, from California's 21st District.
