Sengupta conferred with 'Van Heusen Emerging Designer' award

FDCI announced the winners for the 'Van Heusen Emerging Designer of the Year'. Amalraj Sengupta, a NIFT Kolkata graduate emerged as the winner followed by Varun Arora, a student at Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi. In third place is Divyanka Bedi, a graduate from Raffles Design Institute, Mumbai. Van Heusen Emerging Designer of the Year is aimed at fostering and promoting promising talent in India. The glittering winner's trophy has been designed by Li & Fung Design Studio

The three finalists were required to create lines based on the submitted sketches in accordance with model measurements provided to them to showcase their talent and creativity. The jury selected the winning entry on the presentation of the lines. The three finalists werer given the privilege to exhibit their line on the final day of the 'Van Heusen India Mens Week', September 13, 2009.

JJ Vallaya a founder member of FDCI has shown great interest in promoting the talent of upcoming designers and has given his wholehearted support to the Van Heusen Emerging Designer of the Year initiative.

Mr. Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI, said: “We are delighted to announce Amalraj Sengupta as the Van Heusen Emerging Designer of the Year. To all of us, each of the finalists is a winner! They are at the start of their careers and we are confident that their lines will be very successful. I am sure we are going to hear a lot about them in the years to come. 'Van Heusen Emerging Designer of the Year Contest 2009' in association with FDCI was open from August 5, 2009 for all Students and Professional Fashion Designers with experience of three years or less. Interested contestants were asked to submit their entries on the event website www.vanheusenindiamensweek.com. All the contestants had to submit three entries, outlining clearly the concept, material used, and collection note in full colour by August 20, 2009. An independent jury deliberated over the 70 entries received from fashion institutes across the country, before deciding on the final three.

FDCI made the formal announcement of its first annual 'Van Heusen India Mens Week' at a press conference over a month ago in New Delhi. After a decade of successful India Fashion Weeks, FDCI is ready to explore the growing potential of Men's Fashion in India in partnership with Van Heusen, India's leading lifestyle brand. The 'Van Heusen India Mens Week' positions India as the 4th Fashion Capital of the World to host an independent Mens Week.

'Van Heusen India Mens Week' is being held in New Delhi from September 11 – 13, 2009 at The Grand and will feature 15 shows and over 20 exhibitors. It promises to be a world class event showcasing the very best of Indian talent. Designers will be invited to cover the widest range of men's fashion – menswear and accessories, under one roof, affording buyers and consumers the widest possible selection of fashion for men.
