Fail-safe, appealingly presented tips for good shoe care are more successful than purely sales-oriented, memorised questioning where staff are constantly under pressure. In his talk Ehlers had many practical tips on how to make customers curious without wanting to force something on them.

Corporate consultant Alexander von Keyserlingk is convinced of the opportunities for decelerating retail. In his plea for more value, more experience and more sustainability this expert is committed to good quality and balanced value for money. The future of retail – also in the shoe business – lies, according to Keyserlingk, in individuality and quality. Excellent advice and assistance, inspiring ranges with surprises in store, intelligent cross-selling and target-group focused marketing are the key pillars of success in the future.

Shoes as Works of Art
Shoe styles by great French fashion designers like Charles Jourdan, Louis Vuitton, Raymond Massaro, Robert Clergerie, Roger Vivier and Stéphane Kélian as well as European designers like Patrick Cox, Paco Rabanne and Andréa Pfister were presented by the International Shoe Museum of Romans. The exhibition presented 20 styles dating from between 1967 and 2009 selected from the French museum's total of 16,500 exhibits. Numerous visitors came to be inspired by the creative designs. A highlight for movie fans were the ankle boots by designer Carlo Pompéi worn by Leonardo Di Caprio in the 1997 feature film Titanic. “We had many visitors and the event was a resounding success. The professional setting meant the exhibition went down very well. We were able to forge key contacts for future projects,” was the verdict of Philippe Drésin, Deputy Mayor of the town of Romans.

The transformation of shoe lasts into unconventional works of art made of golden sequins, tree bark or artificial lawn was featured in the exhibition Art & Hamlet. This unique idea was the brainchild of Detlef W. Stichling, founder of Hamlet and former advertising filmmaker. Michael Ottopal, stage designer, sculptor and owner of Hamlet, realised the project with artists and art enthusiasts. The stunning result is a series of very individually designed art works and a brilliant marketing tool. “It is just great fun to work creatively with shoes as a product. At GDS we received numerous enquiries from artists and buyers who were enthusiastic about this idea. The project is now to become a kind of travelling exhibition and will in future be featured in the shop windows of some of our clients,” explained Detlef W. Stichling.

At GDS – International Event for Shoes & Accessories from 11 to 13 September 2009 765 exhibitors with over 1,800 collections presented their trends for Spring/Summer 2010 and the current season. The next GDS will be held in Düsseldorf from 12 to 14 March 2010.
